Board Member Certification Course

Course Overview

This comprehensive Board Member Certification course is designed to fulfill the certification requirements for board members of condominium associations, cooperative associations, and homeowners’ associations in Florida under Chapters 718, 719, and 720 of the Florida Statutes.

As a board member, you have significant responsibilities to your community. This course will provide you with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively fulfill your fiduciary duties, understand your legal obligations, and implement best practices for community governance.

What You’ll Learn

  • Legal requirements for board meetings and notices
  • Proper procedures for imposing fines and suspensions
  • Financial management and transparency obligations
  • Association recordkeeping requirements
  • Statutory inspection and reporting mandates
  • Election procedures and requirements
  • How to identify and handle conflicts of interest

Who Should Take This Course

  • Newly elected or appointed board members who must complete certification within 90 days
  • Current board members whose certification is expiring (valid for 4 years)
  • Property owners interested in serving on their association board
  • Community association managers who want to better understand board member requirements
  • Anyone interested in community association governance

Certification Information

Under Florida law, newly elected or appointed board members must either:

  1. Certify in writing that they have read the association’s declaration of condominium, articles of incorporation, bylaws, and current written policies; that they will work to uphold such documents and policies to the best of their ability; and that they will faithfully discharge their fiduciary responsibility to the association’s members; OR
  2. Complete a DBPR-approved educational certification course.

This course satisfies the second option and provides a more comprehensive understanding of your responsibilities than simply reading the documents. Upon completion, you’ll receive a certificate that you can provide to your association as proof of your certification.
